Harrington Park
Harrington Park is just one of the many suburbs of the Macarthur region of the city of Sydney, New South Wales Australia. IT is approximately 46 kilometers away from Sydney’s Central Business area. In is under the local government of Camden Council. It used to be a grand estate of the Fairfax family who were the famous publishers of Sydney Morning Herald. Later on this estate was developed and became a residential suburb while the Harrington Park Estate is still run by the Fairfax family.
The Muringong people from the southernmost of the Darug people used to settle in Harrington Park. Back in 1788, after the arrival of the British settlers, an unusual story of two cows and two bulls escaped from the Government Farm of Rosehill and accidentally found a rich and lush land in the south western part of Sydney. The cattle multiplied surprisingly in large numbers. The area was discovered and surveyed by the governor Hunter in 1975 and gave it a name of Cowpasture because of the herds.
The region became a government reserve but land grants were also given to John Macarthur. By 1813, there was a two thousand acres of land granted to Captain William Douglas Campbell as a consolation to ease his loss of snow Harrington ship which was taken by convicts in Sydney Harbour in May 15, 1808. A year after another ship of his fell in together with the Harrington in the Philippines. Campbell then named the land grant as Harrington Park in honour of his vessel.
A series of land owners came to buy and then sold the Harrington Park estate. But it was only on 1944 that Sir Warwick Oswald Fairfax who was a director of John Fairfax Ltd took the ownership of Harrington Park and the nearby property that improvement of the estate was developed into a farm and nursery of flowers. In 1950’s camellia, roses and imported flowers were richly produced on this area.
Around 1976, Sir Warwick bred horses of Poll Hereford breed which made him win several shows. He considered Harrington Park a home to his family and dogs. The Fairfax family still owns the Harrington Park property to date.
In 2001 Australian Census, Harrington Park suburb is home to a population of 3,015 people. At this year, Harrington Park had more young children at 63% from the total population, with 13% under the age of four years old. The residents are living in detached houses with no apartments on record. About two thirds of the houses are mortgaged.
