The suburb was named after Earl of Guildford. But before it was established in 1837, the Bidjigal clan inhabited the area which was now known as the Guildford suburb. And the Dharug people lived in the area across the Cumberland Plain in small groups. When the European settlement began in 1837, Lieutenant Samuel North was given 640 acres of land and he named his property Guildford. This is because he has ties with the Earl of Guildford. It was renamed in 1843 to Orchardleigh when it was sold by Lieutenant North. But it was just changed back to Guildford because this was the name that stuck to the region. And for a suburb that have been established for so long, there surely is a lot of history that is written within the different corners of the Old Guildford.
