Cartwright is a suburb located 3 kilometres away from the south western part of Sydney Central Business District. It belongs to the state of New South Wales, Australia under the local government area of the city of Liverpool.

History
Cartwright was established as a suburb in1972 and was also developed as a part of Green Valley Housing Estate during the 1960s. The name Cartwright was taken after Robert Cartwright who was a reverend of St. Luke’s church in Liverpool. He was also granted a piece of land in the Liverpool area.

Geography
Geographically, Cartwright is surrounded by the following suburbs along its borders: there is the Prestons, Miller, Ashcroft, Sadlier and Liverpool. For its northern part, there is the Ashcroft and Sadlier areas and ends with Cabramatta Creek. While the Western boundary ends with Miller. Then there is the Maxwells Creek that surrounds the east boundary while the south boundary ends with the Hoxton Park Rd. This suburb has a broad expanse of shared pathways that interconnects several cul-de-sacs found in the area. There is also a bridge that links Miller over Cabramatta Creek. Powell Park is also the frond for Liverpool City’s BMX club. There is another McGirr Park located on the north east part of Cartwright.

Education
Cartwright has several schools to support the education needs of its residents. In 1967, the Cartwright Public School was established. There is also another Macarthur Community College and the local high school – the Miller Technology High School on this place.

Transport
The suburb is served by bus services T80 that stops at Ashcroft along the T-Way bus lane. There is also Busabout bus routes 861, 853, 854, 855 that services Cartwright. On the south line, a rail station in Liverpool is accessible for the commuters. The major road is found in Hoxton Park Road that leads to Hume Highway in the eastern side connecting to Cowpasture Road in its western side. The Cartwright Avenue has smaller streets leading a path to the rest of the suburbs.

Demographics
In the 2006 census, Cartwright was found to have a total population of 2,084. The Department of Housing had 290 dwellings as part of the significant housing commission population. The suburb’s median household income is $509 per week and an unemployment rate of at 17.6% which happens to be three times bigger than Australian as a whole. The residents were born mostly as Australian and the remaining minorities born overseas: with Vietnam at 5.9%, followed by Lebanon at 2.8%, then New Zealand at 2.1% and lastly Fiji at 1.7%. The residents who are married comprise a 53%, never married at 31%, divorced at 7%, widowed at 5%, and separated at 5%.
