Denham Court
Denham Court is situated 44 kilometres southwest of the Sydney’s CBD, in the local government areas of the Campbelltown City and the Liverpool City, part of the Macarthur region. It is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia with the coordinates of 33°59’48?S 150°50’23?E.
This suburbs history is rich because of varied ownership. Denham Court was named, in 1810, after the 500 acre land grant of Richard Atkins. Denham Court was named after Atkins’ English ancestral home. However, Atkins’ ownership of the land was put to an end when he had acquired debts with Captain Richard Brooks and had to give up Denham Court to pay up his debt. Atkins’ left Sydney for good and Captain Brooks was able to expand his land through his purchase of the four adjoining land grants. He brought his family to Denham Court in 1814 and lived in Sydney. By 1825, the whole Brooks family moved to Denham Court for residence.
Brooks with his desire to imitate his native land, England, has transformed the area into a typical English country estate. He did everything he can to recreate the place and make his estate as one of Sydney’s vibrant social centres in the 1820s and 1830s. With his six daughters, he hosted grand dances and special functions to make the Denham Court a name in the social circles of Sydney. When the captain died at the age of 68 in 1833, the estate was inherited by one of his daughters. The land was then passed on from one family heir to another, as the civilisation in the area flourished.
Typical to suburbs of Sydney, the climate is temperate. Residents and visitors can enjoy warm summers and mild winters with scattered rainfalls.
The suburb’s name has also been through a rich history, of conflicts though. The area was petitioned to be named as Edmondson as suggested by Miss Gowan Flora Macdonald in 1970. Denham Court will only apply to the areas which she owned, the house and the farm. However, after years of word war on what name the place would acquire, it was decided to take Denham Court as the whole town’s title in 1976.
Denham Court is home to beautiful and impressive mansions lining up among subdivisions in the area. It is sometimes referred to as the southwestern millionaires’ row. Most roads are named after the members of the Brooks family tree.
Based on the 2006 census, Denham Court holds 327 residents, popular of which is John Marsden, a solicitor.
