Glenfield
Glenfield is one of many suburbs of Sydney that belongs to the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 40 kilometres away from the South West part of Sydney’s central business district. It is part of the local government area of Campbelltown City and also belongs to the Macarthur region.
The name Glenfield came from the name of the property of an English colonial explorer and surgeon Charles Throsby. The local authorities of Campbelltown City library, stated that the naming of the property originated from Throsby’s old place in Glenfield Leicestershire England. There were actually streets within Glenfield, which are named with British inspired themes such as Canterbury Road, Trafalgar Street and Cambridge Avenue.
Later on the name first came out in the Glenfield railway station which was built in 1869. Then followed with a development of a village in 1881 when the first subdivision of the paddocks was sold. Also as the population grew, a public school was then established in a lowly tent a year after. Then the local post office was built and opened to the public in 1899. The suburb was finally developed in the late fifties till the sixties.
In 1968, Glenfield gained a notorious place image when a hostage siege happened that ended in unusual circumstances which forced the New South Wales police commissioner to act as witness to the wedding of the gunman and the woman hostage. The interesting real life story was made into a plot of a movie – the Mr. Reliable, with lead stars Colin Friels and Jacqueline McKenzie.
In the 2006 Australian census, Glenfield suburb with a postal code of 2167 had a population of 6,759 people. This is composed of 67% born in Australia, and among those born overseas but residents of the suburb is composed of those from United Kingdom at 5%, followed by those from the Philippines at 2%, from Fiji at 2%, from New Zealand at 2% and India at 2%. Most of them were living in single detached houses at 61% while the rest are living in townhouses at 38%.
For the past few decades, Glenfield developed into a modern suburb having more facilities to support its growing population. Among these improvements include residential subdivisions equipped with a lot of amenities and security patrols.
When it comes to transportation, there is a modern version of the Glenfield railway station which is a junction connecting the South railway of East Hills and CityRail network. And just a few years back in 2009, a Glenfield station car park capable of 700 spaces and equipped with disabled parking features, lift access, CCTV cameras, good lighting was built and completed in September 2010. Amazingly, parking is free in this area for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
