Green Valley
Green Valley is a town in Sydney, New South Wales in the continent of Australia located in the coordinates, 33°54’21?S 150°52’01?E. Surrounding suburbs include Cecil Hills, Cecil Park, Bonnyrigg Heights, Middleton Grange, Hinchinbrook, Heckenberg, Busby and Bonnyrigg. Green Valley is located 24 miles west of Sydney CBD in the local government area of the City of Liverpool and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region.
Established in 1982, Green Valley’s very first settlers were the Cabrogal people who spoke the Darug language, a nearly extinct Australian Aboriginal language of the Yuin–Kuric group. The Cabrogal people lived in the eucalyptus covered forests and hunted native animals that roam the area such as wallabies and possums. During the British occupation in Australia, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, in 1810, established a town in nearby Liverpool and granted Bristish settlers with land grants and the conversion of the forests to a farming zone was initiated. Initially, the Green Valley covered a large area of northwest Liverpool and was divided into different suburbs surrounding the present-day Green Valley town. Green Valley has begun its transformation from farmlands to a modern residential area in the 1960s when the Sydney suburban sprawl had finally reached the area of Liverpool. The Green Valley Building Estate was built during this year.
Among the very first settlers of this area was Peter Miller who named a nearby town as Miller. Also is Charles Scrivener, who was once elected as mayor of Liverpool. In 1982, Scrivener supervised the establishment of the Green Valley School, built initially as a large tent and was constructed as a wooden building with an iron roof years thereafter.
Green Valley, like many Sydney suburbs enjoy the temperate climate. Mild winters to play snow with, warm summers to enjoy and scattered rainfall characterize such climate. January is the warmest month and July the coldest. Cyclones do not affect the area of Sydney.
Green Valley is home to 11,959 residents, according to the 2006 population census. Most residents were Australian citizens and a number are born overseas from Vietnam, Fiji, Iraq, Laos and the Philippines. Average age of the population is 30 years old. Most of the people are English speaking with a number who can speak Vietnamese, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic and Assyrian. The main religions are Catholic, Buddhism, Eastern Orthodox and Islam; however, there is about 4.6% of the population who have no religion at all.
Mark Latham, the Australian Labor Party leader grew up in Green Valley, Sydney.
