Moorebank

Moorebank is one of the surrounding suburbs of Sydney, Australia. It is 27 kilometres away in the south-west part of Sydney’s central business district. Moorebank belongs to the state of New South Wales and under the local government area of Liverpool City.

Currently this suburb is known to be a residential and industrial place. It has a small shopping centre which is the Moorebank Shopping Village.

History

The suburb was named after the explorers Thomas Moore and Joseph Banks. For so many years before Moorebank became a suburb, it used to be a place where there were vineyards all over and several rural activities always took place in this this part of Australia. Along the years, it was progressing. Hence on 1973, a school which was called Nuwarra Public School was opened. It was built directly opposite to Mooreband shopping centre that was also opened in the 70’s. Moorebank is located in a plateau that was why in the 1986 flooding, this place was no longer connected from the rest of the surrounding places.

Climate
As it is just a few kilometres away from Sydney, Moorebank shares the same humid climate and abundant sunshine that is well spread out all year round. This strong summer sun is always a blessing to some of the fair skinned residents.

Transportation
There is the m5 South Western Motorway that connects Moorebank to the eastern side of Sydney’s central business district and the western part of Campbelltown. This suburb is also near to Liverpool railway station on the south railway of the City Rail

Schools
Along the years after Nuwarra Public School – which is the first school was opened, new ones were introduced such as St. Joseph’s Primary School, and the Moorebank High School.

Sport and Recreation
Morebank is a place where several local sporting team came from. They use Hammondville Park as home ground. They are the Australian Football team : the Moorebank Magpies which took part in Sydney AFL competition. Moorebank is also the home of the rugby league: the Moorebank Rams who played in Canterbury-Bankstown Junior Rugby League and fielded in the Metropolitan Cup. Moorebank also has fielded the soccer team: Southern Districts Soccer Football Association, a cricket team in Fairfield-Liverpool Cricket Association, a baseball team : the Royals, as well as netball and fishing clubs.

There is also a remote control race track in Moorebank. It is called the John Grant International Raceway based in Helles Reserve near Moorebank Road and M5 intersection. The racetrack is managed by a nonprofit club: the New South Wales Remote Control Race Car Club Inc. who became the host of the 2011 IFMAR World Championship in the 8th scale racing category. The event was attended by the best of 8th scale racers in the world.

Demographics
Based on the 2006 census, Moorebank has 7,599 residents. The median family income family income was $1,272 a little higher than the national level. The average age was 34 years old, several years younger than Australia’s average age. Moorebank is also a multi cultural community having 5% speaking in Arabic, 5% in Greek, 2.9% in Vietnamese, 2.5% in Italian and 2.4% in Hindi.
