Edmondson Park
Edmondson Park is considered a Sydney suburb, in New South Wales, Australia. It is situated in the following coordinates: 33°57’49?S 150°51’23?E. It is 25 miles southwest of the central business district of Sydney in the local government area of the City of Liverpool in the State District of Macquarie Fields. Other suburbs surrounding the Edmondson Park are Horningsea Park, Prestons, Casula, Leppington, Denham Court, Inglebun and Glenfield.
The town was named after John Edmondson; the man who received the first Australian Victoria Cross medal for his bravery on the World War II which was awarded to him in 1941. John Edmondson died in the war, though. The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration of valor given to those who died “in the face of the enemy”. The name was first suggested by Miss Gowan Flora MacDonald during the 1970s when the Denham Court property was being petitioned for a change in name. She petitioned to name the Denham Court as such for she wanted to preserve the Denham Court title to the house and farm she owned. However, because of boundary issues between Liverpool and Campbelltown, the City of Campbelltown did not agree on this. They wanted that the whole area be named after the historical “Parish of Denham Court” not just the house and the farm. In November of 1970, the North South Wales Geographical Names Board made a compromise. The area covered by the City of Liverpool territory will be named Edmondson Park while the remainder will be called Denham, which later in 1976 was renamed as Denham Court, after six years of war of words.
The climate in Edmondson Park is typically temperate, the typical Sydney climate. Summers are warm, winters are mild and rainfall is spread throughout the year. The warmest month is January and the coldest is July. Cyclones do not affect the area.
Edmondson Park is part of the South West Growth Centre and is expected to see developments in the coming years. A station linked to the South West Rail Link will serve the suburb. The Rail Link is currently in construction and is intended to be a major piece of transportation to cater Sydney’s South West Growth Centre. It will consist of a 7.10 metre double-track railway that will serve the developing suburbs of Edmondson Park as well as Leppington. The said project is currently being handled by the Transport for New South Wales, an agency of the Government of New South Wales.
