The suburb of Bridgewater came into existence in the year 1840. this is due to the construction of an inn at the fording point. The place was originally known as Cock’s Creek. John Dunn, a miller, built the first mill across the creek in the year 1859. This beautiful mill was powered by the huge waterwheel and this became a distinctive part of the place. John Dunn was also the person who changed the name of the place from Cock’s Creek to Bridgewater. Nobody knows the exact reason but most people believed that the miller from village of Bridgewater in Somerset simply named the place after his old home. The only railway in the place which was closed in 1987 was converted to standard gauge in 1995 and continuous to be the main line from Adelaide to Melbourne till the present years.
