Minto Heights is located in the state of New South Wales in Sydney Australia. Minto Heights can be found about 50 km south west of the Sydney central business district as well as in the local government area of the city of campbelltown which is under in the Macarthur region.
You can see and perceive the Minto Height’s history just by walking around and exploring its suburb. You will see that in the bushland which is just next to the Georges River a memory of the days where the Tharawal people were the only people living in the area. The Tharawal people were the Aboriginal inhabitants of the southern Sydney and as well in the illawan region around 1788. They live in the areas from south side of the Botany Bay and around Port Hacking until to the north of the Shoalhaven River and in the inland of Campbeltown and Camden.
The Minto Heights has an open space which covers a 5 acre area or about 20,000 m2. You will wee its block hints farming history in the area. When the bushland was cleared in the late 19th century it was then replaced by orchards and other small farms. Orchards are intentional planting of trees which are being use for food production. The orchard may include fruits and nut producing trees which are being grown for commercial production.
The bushland which was used in planting orchards where almost replaced with subdivisions during the Campbelltown’s population boom in 1970 but the Council zoned suburb a “Scenic Protection Area” with minimum of 5 acres which saved the land to be used as subdivisions. Until then it was still known as East Minto and like its neighboring area were named after Earl of Minto, Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound who was Viceroy of India in the year 1807 up to 1814.
It was in the year of 1973 where the campbelltown Council proposed to change the name into Warby which was then rejected by the locals who suggested and insisted that the place be named East Minto but it was rejected as well by the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales which was based on their policy against “East” and other compass points to be added to any suburb names. There were other names that were suggested but still were decline until they came up with the name Minto Heights which was in 1976.
