Gilead is a name taken from the bible and famed for its rich wheat fields. In the bible the name Gilead refers to the hill of testimony or mound witness. You might think it is an ideal name for a place to have such diverse wheat farm when Reuban Uther was granted around 400 acres in the year 1812. Reuban Uther continued his dream of farming the land for six year before selling the land to Thomas Rose and then renamed the land as Mount Gilead. Rose then farmed the area successfully for more than sixty years. It was in 1941 that the land was then sold to Macarthur-Onslow family which is the owner of the nearby Camden Park Estate which they still won until today. The Camden Park is a large sheep station which was established by John Macarthur.
There where rumored that the area will be used as suburban development but until then it remained as farmland. The Gilead’s postcode is 2560 and the villages you can find around Gilead are Glen Alpine, Rosemeadow, St. Helens Park, Menangle Park, Menangle, Wedderburn and Appin.
